Research and Archives

The Fremont County Pioneer Museum is proud to hold in its collections over 1,000 linear feet of archival documents, over 10,000 photographs and 500 research books relating to the early history of Fremont County. In this collection, you can find treasures from early ledgers from South Pass City, locally published memoirs, early photographs of the area and more. The museum also maintains an extensive series of vertical files of information about early families from the area.

Our archives and research facility will re-open to the public in May 2009.  In the meantime, our staff are busy working behind the scenes to unpack, organize and ensure proper care of the archives.

All inquiries should be in writing by email or regular mail. Each inquiry will receive a personal response.  Requests should be made by either e-mail or mail and should include the following:

Name
email address and mail address
phone number

If you are planning to visit the area to research, please give our staff at least 2 weeks notice so that we can assure the proper materials can be made available. Some of the museum's material is stored at an off-site facility. To download our complete research policy in .pdf format, please click here.

Photo Collections Available On-Line

The Fremont County Pioneer Museum is please to announce that in conjunction with the Wyoming Humanities Council, a small sampling of the museum's photo collection is now available on-line. With a $1500 We the People grant, the museum has not only been able to properly catalog its photographs, they are now available to the general public online. As funding is available, the museum hopes to continue this project to make the photo collection more easily searchable to researchers both on-site and off-site.

The photos are hosted by PastPerfect-Online and require you to leave the FCPM site. While the museum strives to produce accurate descriptions of the artifacts, this is not always the case. The museum has been collecting items since 1915. Early records stressed the object, its value and its donor instead of an accurate description of the item. A variety of people with a variety of knowledge, skills and abilities have created these records over time. You will find inaccuracies, misspellings and uncertainties. We appreciate your understanding of this aspect of human nature.

Should you discover an error, please email us at archives@fcpm.org. Be sure to include the photo's catalog number so we can be sure to change the records as needed.
